Handmade gifts are always appreciated, especially when you show someone how much you care by spending the time creating something special just for them. A personalized tote bag can be a great gift, and useful, too. This project is not geared toward children and is best suited for adults.
What You'll Need:
2 yards of Fabric in Two Different Colors or Prints
Bounty Paper Towels
Set up your sewing machine and supplies to make this tote bag. Measure a 32" x 14" rectangle on one piece of fabric. Repeat this step on the other piece of fabric. Cut both of these pieces out. Fold the pieces in half lengthwise and press with an iron. The folded edge is the bottom of the tote bag. Put the right sides together of the two pieces of fabric and pin the side seams. Stitch the side seams of both pieces and press open with the iron.
Cut a 24" x 4" strip of either fabric for the shoulder strap. Fold the strip in half lengthwise with the left side exposed. Stitch 1/4" seam on the machine and turn to the right side. Place the fabric you chose for the lining over the outside piece of the tote bag, so that the left sides of each piece of fabric are together. There are no exposed seams.
Fold in 1/4" seam of each piece at the top and pin together. At the center-top of each side of the tote bag, before this seam is stitched, pin the shoulder strap, 1/4" inside. Stitch this seam with a zigzag stitch, with the shoulder strap included.
Draw a straight line on the outside of the tote bag with fabric chalk. Write the person's name with the dark color permanent marker and you’re done! Clean up any loose threads and fabric scraps with Bounty paper towels.
